03 ✦ How a group picks a partner
Why KATSEYE chose Never Have I Ever.
Handing a group this big to a beauty brand isn't a vibe decision. Before a single design gets drawn, there's a checklist, and most brands don't clear it.
Have we done a collab this big before? Never Have I Ever has run more than a hundred licensed partnerships with artists. Character studios: Peanuts, Miffy, Kewpie. Museums and estates: Van Gogh, Matisse, Hokusai, Frida Kahlo. A capsule with RIPNDIP. Every one of them cleared and delivered.
Is there a real process? An artist needs to know their artwork won't turn up somewhere they never approved. That means approving the artwork, approving the samples, signing off on every single design, and a person who actually answers the email when a color is off. Unglamorous, and the entire ballgame.
Who's in? Urban Outfitters already snatched up — sets. We held back a small run for our besties online. You heard it here first, and you know it's gonna sell out.
And then the part that's hard to fake. This brand was built to pay the people who make the art. Never Have I Ever was the first beauty brand to license artists' work with royalties attached, back when it was two people working through a pandemic. The royalty structure wasn't bolted on to land a big partner. It's how the company has always run.
